The Story

Part Eight

“The Battle Begins”

Text: Joshua

Genesis 12:1 says, The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go the land I will show you.” (NIV)

Genesis 12:5 says, He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. (NIV)

Genesis 12:7, The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To you offspring I will give this land.” (NIV)

A new leader.

We don’t follow man we follow God.

Deuteronomy 34:10, Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. (NIV)

Numbers 12:6-8. When a prophet of the Lord is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the Lord. (NIV)

He orchestrated a transfer of leadership. Deuteronomy 34:9, Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

He gave Joshua the key to success. Joshua 1:8, Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (NIV)

He made sure the people saw His power and glory in Joshua’s leadership (turn to Joshua 3:15-15).

A victory.

Joshua 2:9. I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. (NIV)

Joshua 6:20. When the trumpet sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city. (NIV)

The key to success with God is obedient faith.

I Peter 3:1 says, Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 12:9, But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (NIV)

Joshua 6:27. So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land. (NIV)

A defeat.

Joshua 7:4. So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai. (NIV)

Joshua 7:10-12. Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. (NIV)

Sin destroys.

Romans 6:23 says, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)

A big mistake.

Joshua 9:14, The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. (NIV)

Joshua 9:23, You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God. (NIV)

When it comes to your spiritual life you can never let your guard down.

First, we see how serious God is about sin.

Second, we see God’s continued pursuit of His people.
